What are Taste Buds?

Taste Buds contain the taste receptor cells. It is estimated that adults have between 2,000 and 4,000 working taste buds. Children have more, but as we get older, we lose taste buds.  This may be why something tastes more intense to your child than it does for you.

The sensory cells in taste buds are actually renewed about once every week and most of them are on your tongue, which is why if you burn your tongue, it will only take a few days to heal.  However, taste buds can be found all around the oral cavity, in your throat, epiglottis, the nasal cavity and even in the esophogaus.
